Private Donald Campbell Taylor

Donald Taylor was born in Paris on September 21, 1921, the son of Murray Taylor and Nellie J. G. (Campbell). They lived at 93 Willow Street with Donald’s older sister, Margaret Jean. Prior to his enlistment during the Second World War, he was employed at the Gypsum Lime and Alabastine Company.

He was a private in the orderly office of the Highland Light Infantry, Canadian Armed Services Force in Stratford.

It is very unlikely, however, that Donald served overseas. He was an usher in his sister’s wedding in Paris on April 29, 1944. And he married Margaret (Peggy) Harris in London, Ontario on June 16, 1945. It is extremely doubtful that he would be allowed to return to Canada during some of the fiercest fighting of the war in the weeks following D-Day. It is more likely that he was a member of the 2nd Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry which was designated as a Reserve Army and was never mobilized.

Donald and Peggy emigrated to the United States shortly after the war. His U.S. Social Security Application is dated November, 1956. At some point they had a son. At the time of his mother’s death in 1971, he was living in Santa Anna, California.  He and his wife later moved to Prescott, Yavapai County, Arizona where Donald died on May 9, 2007 and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery.
